AN HONOURABLE CREATION

WALTHAM  PARISH COUNCIL WAR MEMORIAL PLAQUES

Here at Stone Sign Company, we were honoured to be asked to create three Welsh Slate plaques for Waltham on The Wolds Parish Council’s War Memorial.

The Council originally commissioned the memorial back in 2008 to honour the Waltham men who lost their lives in either one of the World Wars. Situated on the Malt House Green in the heart of the village across from the church, the original memorial was made from a large piece of Green Slate sourced from the Lake District and featured an inscription carved directly into the stone.

The inscription weathered and faded over time and the whole site had become overgrown, so the Parish Council decided to renovate and renew the entire memorial.

It was decided that the original war memorial stone would remain but that the inscription would be covered with a new, engraved Welsh Slate plaque. As no names were recorded on the original stone, it was decided that two new memorial stones would be added to the site.

Renovation on the memorial commenced in July 2020.

Stone Sign Company were contacted by the Parish Councillor to create the three new memorial stone plaques. Alongside our designers, our expert stonemasonry team crafted three bespoke plaques using locally sourced Welsh slate with an attractive fine rubbed finish, built to stand the test of time in the renovated War Memorial. Each plaque features a deeply engraved white enamel inscription; the centre plaque replicates the wording on the original stone and the two additional plaques feature the names of the fallen.

They were then finished with neat, clean edges and installed by our team, using faceless plaque fixings so as not to interrupt the memorial face. The site was planted up with perennial plants and bulbs which will look spectacular in Spring.

The three memorial plaques were installed onto the Green Slate boulders in October 2020, just in time for the Parish Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 8th November 2020. The socially distanced service took place in front of the new war memorial site, which was renovated and opened up in the hopes of becoming a beautiful focal point in the heart of the Waltham on the Wolds village.
