A Stone Sign Guide

HOW TO FIX A SLATE SIGN

Here at Stone Sign Company, a common query we receive from customers is about how to fix a slate sign to the exterior of their house.

There are a few different ways to fix your stone or slate house sign to the wall of your property, but our most recommended method involves faceless fixings. The use of faceless attachments ensure that your house sign does not feature any visible drill holes or fixings, allowing the design to remain uninterrupted.

We have found that many people believe faceless sign fixings are difficult to install and that this must be carried out by a professional, but this is not the case. Faceless fixings are quite simple to attach and require just a few tools to install. Read through our step-by-step guide below to see just how to fix a slate sign:

Please note – we advise that you are sure that you have selected the perfect position for your stone or slate house sign before you begin, as faceless fixings can be difficult to remove after installation.

THE PROCESS:

STEP 1

Firstly, screw the provided dowels into the rear of your sign using the threaded inserts. This step doesn’t require the use of any tools – these inserts will not allow over-tightening so simply tighten them as much as you can with just your hands. The holes are made to be only very slightly larger than the dowels to ensure that everything sits firmly in place.

STEP 2

Decide on the placement of the sign using the drilling template provided to mark out the placement of your plaque and use a spirit level to ensure your plaque is straight and level. If you have chosen a bespoke sign that did not arrive with a template, then carefully use the plaque to mark out its position against the wall.

STEP 3

Use a pen/pencil or bradall to accurately mark the placement of the drilling holes through the template provided. If you have chosen a bespoke sign that did not arrive with a template, then please mark the positions of the holes by drawing a level line on the wall and measuring hole marks off the plaque.

STEP 4

Using the marks made in the previous step, carefully and accurately drill two holes into the wall using an 8-10mm drill bit. These holes should be approximately 50mm deep to allow the plaque to sit flush to the wall.

STEP 5

This step requires the use of a hard-wearing epoxy resin or masonry exterior grab adhesive. There are numerous brands available, e.g No More Nails or GripFill. You will need to roughly half fill the holes made in Step 4 using your chosen adhesive. Please note that this will set very quickly so be prepared to move onto Step 6 immediately.

The final step is to guide the dowels on the rear of your stone sign into the holes in the wall smoothly. Ensure that the sign is as close to the wall as possible. Press and hold your sign firmly against the wall for 30-60 seconds to ensure a strong attachment.
