Stone Sign Company were recently contacted by a client to create two custom stone boulders.

We received a request from Van Mildert College, Durham University, to create two bespoke boulder signs to mark the entrances to the college on Elvet Hill Road and South Road, Durham. The client requested two different boulders, both with the college name and crest engraved into the stone.

Our talented in-house designer drew up the designs for the boulders based on specifications provided by the client. Each boulder was crafted using quality Welsh Pennant Sandstone, which offers a beautiful blue-grey finish. We selected this stone as it is particularly hardwearing in outdoor conditions, and will retain its beauty for decades. The stone was carved into shape by our expert masons at our in-house facility.

The plaques were crafted using the finest Welsh Slate and inset into the boulders. Each plaque features an inscription as well as the Van Mildert College crest, perfectly hand-painted and gilded by our expert artisans. We then also carved a fossil into each boulder at the client’s request. Our expert team then securely fitted the boulders into place on the campus using strong steel ground anchors to ensure they remain in place.
